Antiques dealer Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows that are found in England in which she documents the treasures that she discovers inside. An intriguing letter calls her to the tiny town of Bewlay which is hidden away in the countryside far from any other, she takes off on a train, with her companion to spend the day in Bewlay.
The mysterious figure who called her to help is not there upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. An uncompromising landowner denies access to the barrow and locals are suspicious of the lady who is traveling alone as well (gasp!) wears trousers.
The construction of Hob’s Barrow is off to a rocky start. And then Thomasina begins to have strange dreams…
